When you have a tooth that is cracked, chipped, or subject to tooth decay, it’s of the utmost importance that you visit with Seattle cosmetic dentist Dr. Arkadi Razoumovich. During a consultation, Dr. Razoumovicho will determine the best possible option to deal with your damaged or decayed tooth. Now, in some cases, minor treatments such as fillings or bonding may be best. In other cases, getting Seattle porcelain veneers may do the trick. But in serious cases of chipping, cracking, or decay, the best option is likely going to be dental crowns.
Dental crowns are specially fashioned caps that are designed to fit over a damaged or decayed tooth. The dental crown will protect the tooth from further harm, reduce any discomfort or pain you experience because of the tooth, and will also restore the function of the tooth and the integrity of your bite. We’d like to briefly go over the basics of the dental crown procedure so you understand what the treatment involves and how it can benefit you.
The first step of the procedure involves prepping the tooth for the dental crown. During this step, Dr. Razoumovich will remove any decayed or severely damaged portions of the tooth. Doing so will ensure the overall strength of the remaining tooth structure and that no decay will spread once the crown is placed.
The next step of the dental crowns process is making the impression of the tooth. The impression will be made with special material to capture the full shape and contour of the tooth that has been prepped. This impression will be used when fabricating the dental crown, and every effort will be made to ensure that the crown (if it’s a ceramic one) matches the color of your other teeth. You will then receive a temporary crown to be placed atop the tooth.
The last step of the dental crowns procedure will involve the placement of the permanent dental crown. The temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is adhered in place using a strong dental adhesive material. The dental crown is then fashioned and polished while in place to ensure that it fits properly and does not interfere with or alter a patient’s bite.
